My Desk Is Broken
My keyboard shelf is currently propped up against a wall. I’m typing with a keyboard on my lap. This takes me back to last year, when I moved into the house and was working under some unusual conditions. I’ve known this was coming for a while. The shelf has been hard to move and has fallen out at least once a day for the last week or so. Yesterday, it came out for good.
The lesson in this is to take care of your essential equipment — and it doesn’t get more essential than a good computer desk with a keyboard shelf at the right height. You need to be able to look straight at your screen and use your mouse in a comfortable position. OK, keeping the keyboard on my lap will work for a short time, but it’s no good having an ergonomic keyboard if you use it in a position that will give you repetitive strain injury.
So, what’s the solution? In the short term, I’ll ask my handy hubby to replace the offending screw with one that will actually hold the darned shelf in place. In the long term, I’ll probably be looking for a new desk.
