Blog Your Way To Writing Success
Starting a blog was the best move I ever made. It’s been a couple of years since I started my first blog and now I recommend the move to all new freelance writers. That’s because a blog is one of the best investments you could ever make in your writing career. Here’s why.
Writing Practice
First of all, a blog is a place where you can practice your writing. You can write about anything you like in any style you like. If you’ve always fancied writing for Cosmopolitan or the New York Times, here’s your chance to try to match the style while retaining your own voice. The more you write, the better you get at writing, so time spent blogging isn’t wasted.
Writing Showcase
Second, a blog is a place where you can show off your writing to potential clients. Choose the types of writing you want to showcase and post relevant examples on your blog. This can be keyword articles, editorials, sample chapters from ebooks, short stories, poems, novel excerpts — whatever you want to get paid for writing. And if you have to do a writing sample for a client, unless the client plans to pay you for the sample, there’s nothing wrong with posting it on your blog first. Over time, you should build up a large portfolio of nearly every type of writing you want to do.
Writing Connections
Third, a blog is a great place to connect with other writers. We all love finding out what other writers have to say. I subscribe to more than 100 blogs at any time (I keep paring them down, and the numbers keep rising again). Other writers drop by, comment on your content, and let you know about other things that are happening. These contacts, whether random or regular, might soon lead to more opportunities to get paid to write.
Blogging Success
Fourth, running a blog gives you the opportunity to show off your blogging skills, which can lead to guest posting gigs on other blogs. Guest posting shows that other people think your writing is worth reading, which is very good for your writing business and writing career. And don’t forget that you can also get paid to blog at several blog networks.
Put all this together and you have a place where you can build your brand as a writer and blogger. Once people get to know the quality of your work, you’ll soon be successful.
